Retreat
The environmentally friendly ship was jointly developed by Brugge Shipping Co., Ltd. and Tianfan Co., Ltd., and was named "Bruge Tianfan" at the naming ceremony held at a port in Hamburg, Germany on the 15th.
The captain is 132 meters and is scheduled to sail in January 2008. "Bruge Tianfan" will travel across the Atlantic to Venezuela, then arrive in Boston, USA, and eventually return to Europe.
What makes this boat special is that part of its power is provided by a huge kite. The computer-controlled kite system costs 500,000 euros (about $725,000) and is fixed on a mast 15 meters high. The kite covers an area of 160 square meters and is shaped like a glider. It can fly up to 300 meters and provides a wind-assisted diesel engine to drive a 10,000-ton wheel.
Driving a ship with wind energy seems to be a step backwards because wind energy is often considered to be primitive and not stable enough. Wind-driven ships were replaced by steam engine-driven ships more than a century ago. Nowadays, in the face of global climate change, wind energy is “revived†with modern technology.
Neil Stolberg, head of Brugge Shipping Co., said in an interview with a Reuters reporter on the "Brug Tianfan" deck: "This is the beginning of the ship's power revolution. Although only moving forward A small step is crucial to future development."
According to Reuters, the kite system can reduce fuel consumption by at least 20% per day, which is equivalent to saving $1,600 per day. At the same time, the ship's carbon dioxide emissions are also reduced by about 20%.
Changing wind into gold
Tianfan Co., Ltd. R&D staff Stefan Ulag and other engineers lasted more than five years and eventually successfully developed and perfected the kite system. Both companies hope to show customers the first voyage of the freighter, and it has become a reality that the wind has become a gold.
Brugge Shipping Co., Ltd. has just installed the system on a brand new freighter. When Urag was interviewed on board, the ship smelled of paint.
Urag, 35, said that when he was 16 years old, when he was flying a kite, he suddenly came up with the idea that he would use the power of kites to drive the boat and make the boat go faster and faster.
“For me, the real motivation for research is to find a balance between ecology and the economy. At the same time, I have to prove that protecting the environment can pay off,†Urag said.
Urag said many politicians and leaders complain that curbing global warming and reducing greenhouse gas emissions will bring a heavy economic burden. But Tianfan Co., Ltd. wants to tell people that this theory is still true: protecting the environment can save money.
“If the calculations are accurate, our customers can not only reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but also increase profits to a certain extent,†he said.
The bigger the province
Urag said that although the current environmental protection ship has limited effect on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, he is very optimistic about the future development of environmental protection vessels. If the area of the kite is larger, the ship can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30% to 50%.
Tianfan Co., Ltd. plans to install 320 square meters of kites on two ships of Brugge Shipping Co., Ltd. before 2009. Then, the company plans to increase the kite area to 600 square meters. "At that time, the savings will be very substantial," Urrag said.
Urag is very optimistic about the future sales of environmentally friendly ships. He said that the company has received three orders. If a 55-meter-long small environmentally friendly ship meets the expected savings target, the company will welcome more buyers.
Urag said: "If the maiden voyage of 'Bruge Tianfan' is successful next year, we plan to install a kite system for 4 to 8 ships next year. We will sell at least 35 such systems in 2009, and then sell more than one year thereafter. Fan." By 2015, the company plans to install the system for 1,500 ships.
"Trust me, if we can succeed, finding a buyer is not a problem at all," Urag said.
The pillow plate heat exchangers are very versatile, and have been used in a wide range of industries, in applications such as cooling and heating of process liquids, condensation and evaporation of condensates, freezing and defrosting of liquids, direct heating and cooling of viscous liquids, and heat recovery from effluent waste streams.
Some examples of applications of pillow plate heat exchangers include cooling and heating of food and beverages, process liquids in chemical, oil and gas processing, solids, evaporators and crystallizers for pharmaceuticals, and heat recovery from exhaust and wastewater gases in power plants.
The advantages of using pillow plate heat exchangers include high efficiency, compact design, easy and fast installation, low maintenance cost and low energy consumption. The pillow plates are also reliable and durable and can be used for years without significant wear and tear, in addition. they are corrosion resistant and require minimal cleanliness maintenance.
