HIT's Microbial Fuel Cell Research Has Made Important Progress

Under the support of the National Major Water Pollution Special Project and the State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resources and Water Environment, Professor Chen Zhiqiang of Harbin Institute of Technology has made significant progress in research on the deep desalting and heavy metal removal of microbial fuel cells.

Three related research results of this research group: "Study of deionization efficiency with capacitive membrane deionization of microbial fuel cell coupled membrane", "Study on simultaneous desalination and removal of copper ion in novel microbial fuel cell" "A kind of simultaneous desalination and removal of hexavalent chromium "Microbial fuel cell research" was published this year in the internationally renowned journal "Desalination" in the environmental field. The novelty and importance of these three papers were fully acknowledged by reviewers, and HIT was the only signatory unit of the paper.

In view of the low desalination efficiency of low-concentration brines in traditional microbial desalination fuel cells, the research group has innovatively proposed the idea of coupling the desalination of microbial cells with membrane-capacitor deionization technology to treat brine. This technical achievement is expected to achieve the desalination of seawater under special circumstances (such as the lack of electricity).
