1. Determine the location of the handbrake handle Check the handbrake is normal, you can first check the handle position of the car handbrake. Normally, when the handle is lifted to 70% of the full stroke, the handbrake brake system should be in the normal braking position. Therefore, before checking the braking force of the handbrake, you should first find out the 70% working point. It can be determined by the ratcheting of several ratchets.
2. Check whether the handbrake is effective to drive the car to a slope with a large gradient and a good road condition (preferably an asphalt road). Stop the brake and place the stop in neutral (if it is an automatic shift, hang it in N). The handbrake handle is pulled to the working point just determined. Then slowly release the brake pedal. If the car does not slip, it means that the handbrake is effective. This type of inspection should be done once in uphill and downhill positions.
3. How to adjust the handbrake In the above check, if you find that the handbrake's braking performance or sensitivity is not ideal, it can usually be solved by adjusting the handbrake's operation of the copper cable. There is an adjustable compensation mechanism at the connection of the bottom of the handbrake handle with the copper cable (usually covered by the interior trim). With a wrench to loosen the lock nut, the length of the brake copper cable can be stretched. However, some vehicle adjustment mechanisms are located at the bottom of the vehicle. If adjustments are inconvenient, they should be handled by professional maintenance personnel.
Matters needing attention: Many people think that if the brake system fails, you can pull the handbrake to slow down. In fact, this approach is wrong. Because the handbrake mechanism is not precise, the braking forces on the left and right sides are unevenly distributed. When the handbrake is pulled at high speeds, it is very easy to cause the rear wheels of one side to lock up and slip sideways. This is very dangerous. The correct approach is to slow down by downshifting and pull the handbrake to stop the car when the speed is reduced.
