Newport Township Fire Department is getting closer to putting its newly acquired 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury heavy rescue into service. This unit, equipped with an 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane, was purchased from the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Maryland in March. The previous post featured images of the original black and white color scheme, but now the new Squad 1455 is making a fresh impression.
Lt. Rob Schreiner has shared updated photos and details about this new apparatus. It will be stationed at Station 2 on Delaney Road, as it's too tall for the main station. This new rig will replace the two R-Model Mack units currently at Station 2—Squad 1455 and 1456—and will serve as a second unit for extractions, fires, and SRT (Special Rescue Team) operations. With its enhanced capabilities, it will provide much-needed support during structure fires, something the older models couldn’t fully handle.
The new squad is well-equipped with air packs, fire tools, a 30-kW generator, and a large number of ground lights. Along with the new paint job, some minor mechanical issues were addressed, and corrosion was repaired. New radios and an opticom system have been installed, and work is ongoing to transfer tools from the old rigs. Additional striping and decals are still being completed.
The trench box that was previously stored on the old unit will now be moved to a small trailer and pulled by a pickup truck. Importantly, the entire upgrade—including painting, lettering, and repairs—was donated by two generous individuals, meaning the department did not incur any costs for this significant improvement.
This heavy rescue was originally retired by the Lutherville VFD in 2008. The crane mounted amidship has an 8-ton lifting capacity and a 33-foot reach, making it a powerful tool for rescue and recovery operations. Both of the old R-Model Mack squads will be declared surplus and eventually sold.
This update marks an important step forward for Newport Township FPD, enhancing their ability to respond to a wide range of emergencies with a more modern and capable apparatus.
