Newport Township’s new squad ready for service

Newport Township Fire Department is getting closer to putting its newly acquired 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury heavy rescue into service. This unit, equipped with an 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane, was purchased from the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Maryland in March. The previous post featured images of the original black and white color scheme, but now the new Squad 1455 is undergoing final preparations. The vehicle will be stationed at Station 2 on Delaney Road due to its height, which makes it unsuitable for the main station. It will replace the two R-Model Mack units currently based there—Squad 1455 and 1456—and will serve as a second rig for extractions, fires, and technical rescue operations. This upgrade will significantly enhance the department’s ability to respond to structure fires and other complex incidents. Squad 1455 has been fully restored and is now equipped with air packs, fire tools, a 30-kW generator, and numerous ground lights. The unit also includes updated radios and an opticom system. The paint job and lettering were donated by two generous individuals, meaning the department did not incur any costs for this major upgrade. Along with the new paint, some minor mechanical issues were addressed, and corrosion was repaired. The team is still working on outfitting the unit with tools from the older rigs. Additional striping and decal work are still pending. The old trench box will be moved to a small trailer and pulled by a pickup truck. The two R-Model Mack units will be declared surplus and sold. This marks a significant step forward for the Newport Township Fire Department as they continue to modernize their fleet and improve emergency response capabilities.
