UK invents new technology to convert carbon dioxide emissions

Newcastle University scientists in the United Kingdom have developed a breakthrough technology that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This energy-efficient technology converts carbon dioxide emissions into a cyclic carbonate compound.

According to a report from the American Daily Science website, a research team led by Michael North, an organic chemistry professor, estimates that with this technology, it is expected to process up to 48 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, reducing the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions by about 4 percent. %.

This conversion technique uses a catalyst to chemically react carbon dioxide and epoxide to convert the carbon dioxide exhaust gas into a cyclic carbonate. So far, the chemical reaction between carbon dioxide and epoxide needs high temperature and high pressure to succeed. The existing technology also needs ultra-pure carbon dioxide, and the production of ultra-pure carbon dioxide costs a lot.

The research group led by North successfully developed an exceptionally active catalyst. This catalyst is derived from aluminum and is capable of contributing to a chemical reaction that turns the carbon dioxide off-gas into a cyclic carbonate under normal temperature and pressure conditions.
