I just got back from covering the 2-alarm fire that broke out in Berwyn on December 18, 2016. The scene was absolutely intense, and I managed to capture some powerful images that really tell the story of what happened that night. Tim Olk did an incredible job snapping these photos, and I wanted to share them with everyone.
The first image shows an elevated master stream being deployed at the fire scene. It’s a striking sight, with water arcing high into the air as firefighters work tirelessly to bring the flames under control. The second photo captures firefighters encrusted in ice, their gear frozen solid from the relentless spray of water in the cold winter air. You can almost feel the chill just looking at it.
In another shot, you see a single firefighter covered in ice, standing tall amidst the chaos. His determination is palpable, and it's a testament to the bravery of all those who were there that night. There’s also a picture where water is gushing from the burning building, creating this surreal, almost otherworldly scene. It’s a reminder of both the power of fire and the strength of the men and women fighting against it.
One of my favorites is the image featuring the Oak Park Fire Department’s tower ladder at the scene. The equipment looks massive compared to the surrounding structures, emphasizing the scale of the operation needed to tackle such a fire. Another photo shows more of the department’s impressive apparatus, highlighting the teamwork involved in managing such emergencies.
There’s also a shot of Berwyn firefighters on the frontlines, their faces set with resolve. Their presence is crucial, and it’s clear they’re doing everything possible to protect their community. Additionally, there’s a touching image of volunteers helping displaced fire victims, offering support and aid during a difficult time.
Finally, the aftermath of the apartment fire in Berwyn speaks volumes. The damage is evident, but there’s also a sense of resilience—people coming together to clean up and rebuild. These images don’t just document the fire; they honor the hardworking individuals who risked everything to keep others safe.
