Several new emergency response units are expected to arrive at O’Hare Airport, with more in the planning stages. These updates reflect ongoing efforts to enhance safety and readiness at one of the busiest airports in the country.
- A brand-new ambulance, now designated as Ambulance 26, has been deployed at Rescue 1. Additional ambulances for units #16 and #59 are also on their way to the airport shortly.
- The Aviation Department has signed a five-year contract with Oshkosh to acquire up to eight Striker ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) units. The first unit is scheduled to arrive in August and will be a 3000-gallon 6×6 model, similar to those already in service at O’Hare. A second unit is expected before the end of 2010. Depending on potential changes in FAA regulations, two future units could be larger 4500-gallon 8×8 models.
- A large mobile ventilation unit, designed for rapid deployment during emergencies, is currently being ordered for the airport.
- A new mobile command post, labeled 2-7-8, is also in the design phase and is expected to improve coordination during large-scale incidents.
- A new rehabilitation unit, identified as 5-7-3, has been stationed at Rescue 3, supporting injured personnel or first responders.
- Mass Casualty Unit 8-8-1 at Rescue 1 is currently operating with a new (used) Bluebird bus, enhancing its capacity to handle multiple casualties.
- Battalion 6 has received a new 2010 Ford Expedition, improving mobility and communication for senior officers.
- Units 2-9-9 and 2-9-11 have both been equipped with new 2010 Ford F150 4-door pickup trucks featuring bed covers, offering better protection and utility for field operations.
