Gu Lei's first statement after joining BAIC indicated that Beiqi's own brand plan would be postponed.

At the end of July, Gu Lei, head of research and development of Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., formally joined Beiqi as the dean of the Beiqi Automotive Research Institute and was responsible for the development of independent new products of BAIC Group. Previously, this position was held by Daqi Wang, general manager of Beijing Automotive Group.

Recently, Gu Lei said in an interview with overseas media that Beijing Automotive's own brand's first car will be launched in 2011, and other products will appear in the following years. “We are still unable to determine which car will be the first product and there are many possibilities in the future.”

Prior to this, BAIC officials once stated on various public occasions that BAIC's own brand will be officially put into production in 2010. This is a year away from what Gu Lei said.

Informed sources revealed that with the joining of Gu Lei, BAIC has completed a round of personnel changes, and its own brand plan may also be changed. At present, Beiqi is secretly building micro-car products and is located in the southern production base of Zhuzhou, Hunan.

Self-planned or postponed?

Regarding the time difference between the first product of Gu Lei's 2011 launch and the independent product launch plan previously announced by Beiqi, does it mean that Beiqi’s self-determination strategy has been postponed? The reporter called Beiqi and the relevant person denied this: “Automotive Autonomy was adopted by Beiqi in 2010. No changes have been made to the plan for listing in cars. The top models will be high-end models."

There have been rumored reports that Wang Dajun's team has been strict with R&D requirements, and there is still a gap between progress and expectations. In 2010, Beijing Automobile's top executives had considered buying Chery models as a backup. The reason is that Chery has invested a lot of energy and financial resources in product development over the past few years, has a rich product line, and many products have not been put into production.

The source also revealed that more than two weeks ago, senior officials of the Beijing Municipal Government had inspected BAIC and asked about the current status of independent product development. They put forward the following questions: How is Beiqi's own brand progress? Will the market be positioned in the future, where is the competitive advantage? Where is the technology sourced? . “This may be the reason why BAIC re-examines its own brand plan.” But the person did not disclose more about whether BAIC's independent product strategy will materially change.

Prior to this, in terms of independent research and development, sources have disclosed to this newspaper that the Haigui team led by Beiqi General Manager Wang Daqin and the original Beiqi technology research and development team are working hard to develop three models, including Hyundai Sonata and Chrysler Platinum respectively. At present, the brand name “BT01”, Sonata’s brand new renamed model, has been named “moInca” and it has been officially listed on Beijing Hyundai. As an independent research and development product of the joint venture, it does not appear in the ranks of Beiqi’s own brands.

Some analysts believe that Beijing Automotive has been going abroad for more than a year and wants to acquire international auto companies precisely for the purpose of serving its own brand. However, with multiple acquisitions and abortions, it may have affected the progress of independent brands.

Secretly building a microcar base

According to the above-mentioned sources, it is precisely because of the multiple problems in passenger vehicles that BAIC has started to develop micro-vehicles and secretly build micro-car bases.

The selection of the base is exactly the same as the previous Zhuzhou automobile project that Beiqi invested several billion yuan to build. At that time, Beiqi stated that Beijing Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Beiqi Automobile Co., Ltd.") under Beiqi Holding will produce light trucks, light passengers, SUVs and MPVs at this base. It is expected that the annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles will be formed when the project is completed and put into operation in March 2010.

There were also rumors that when the base was built, Beiqi was approaching Hunan Changfeng Motor to show its interest in Changfeng. At present, Guangzhou Automobile has officially acquired Changfeng.

Sources revealed that capacity vacancies, coupled with the government's plans for revitalization of the automobile industry, have driven the rapid growth of the mini-vehicle market to the countryside. This is why Beiqi decided to build a micro-vehicle in Zhuzhou. "Once the micro-vehicle comes out, it can not only make up for the gap in BAIC's products, but it can also add to the sales of Beiqi's 2 million production and sales targets."

It is reported that the "small face" with Beiqi's own brand name is expected to be available in 2011. However, the above Beiqi public relations department said that the first self-owned brand of BAIC is still a car. “The goal of BAIC is to build a mid-to-high-end independent brand sedan. Personnel quietly changes

With the joining of Gu Lei, Beiqi has introduced several leading generals such as Wang Dazhan and Zhang Xin for its own brands in the past two years.

As early as the beginning of July, the above informed sources disclosed to the newspaper that the president of the Chery Automobile Engineering and Technology Research Institute will join Beiqi and replace the position of president of the Beijing Automotive Automotive Research Institute. Gu Lei served in Ford from 1994 to 2005. He is a well-known American automotive crash safety expert and has played Chery since 2005. When interviewed by this newspaper, Chery was highly appraised that it was a rare technical talent.

Wang Da was always in the early last year when Beiqi came through a global open recruitment. He has held positions of responsibility in General U.S. and Shanghai General Motors and is in charge of technology. He was evaluated by the industry as a professional manager who has knowledge of the operational experience and vision of international auto companies in the Chinese automobile market.

Zhang Xin, the former general manager of Nanqi MG, joined Beiqi earlier in the year and was in charge of the passenger vehicle division of Beiqi's own brand, and has gradually introduced dozens of talents from MG and Iveco to join BAIC.

However, with the above-mentioned talents joining, Beiqi has left some talents in the past two years. Dong Yang with a management ability, Guo Qiang with an international perspective, and Tong Zhiyuan, who first started working as a joint venture to make their own products, have left.
