On November 26 this year, the Daqing Petrochemical Plant celebrated the second anniversary of its 300,000-ton-per-year high-concentration compound fertilizer project. Over the past two years, the plant has continuously innovated by developing various new types of compound fertilizers, such as high-phosphorus, high-nitrogen, top-dressing, and BB fertilizers. This effort has ensured the stable and safe operation of the facility and helped the plant capture 80% of Heilongjiang’s compound fertilizer market, significantly easing the pressure on the local agricultural supply chain. As part of the national "Tenth Five-Year Plan," the plant is now accelerating toward becoming a "State Key Compound Fertilizer Production Base," with a planned 1 million-ton-per-year compound fertilizer project currently in the planning stage.
In 2001, farmers in Heilongjiang, China's largest grain-producing province, faced challenges where traditional simple fertilizers failed to boost crop yields significantly. At that time, Daqing Petrochemical Plant, a major petrochemical complex with 22,000 employees, was struggling financially. After conducting in-depth market research, the plant identified a huge demand for chemical fertilizers—up to 2.5 million tons per year. While nitrogen fertilizers dominated the market due to their ease of use and effectiveness, compound fertilizers remained underutilized, accounting for only about 15% of total usage. Additionally, local compound fertilizer production was low, and imported products often suffered from quality issues, including counterfeiting and substandard materials.
Recognizing this opportunity, Daqing Petrochemical Plant launched its compound fertilizer initiative. Supported by the national revitalization plan for the northeast region, the company invested 140 million yuan to build a new compound fertilizer plant. In June 2003, the facility was established, and by November of that year, the first 300,000-ton-per-year high-concentration compound fertilizer plant was completed and successfully commissioned.
Since then, the plant has continued to innovate, introducing new product lines that have not only met growing market demands but also elevated the Daqing brand to a key player in Heilongjiang and the broader Northeast region. The success of the project was further supported by the plant’s strong raw material advantages. To produce 300,000 tons of high-concentration compound fertilizer annually, the plant requires around 150,000 tons of nitrogen fertilizer, 80,000 tons of potash, and 80,000 tons of phosphate. Fortunately, Daqing Petrochemical Company already has an 800,000-ton-per-year urea capacity, while reliable sources of Russian potash and Yunnan phosphate ensure a steady supply.
As the compound fertilizer project gained momentum, the plant remained focused on future growth. Further research revealed that farmer awareness of compound fertilizers had increased significantly, with their market share rising to 50% and expected to reach 70% or more in the coming years. However, the current production capacity in Heilongjiang was limited, with only 600,000 tons annually, and 75% relying on imports. To meet this growing demand, the plant decided to expand further. By 2010, it aimed to build three of the country’s largest compound fertilizer production bases through Phase II and III projects, increasing the annual output of high-concentration compound fertilizer to 1 million tons. The pre-project work is currently underway, signaling a bold step into the future.
