Metso Paper Machinery transforms test paper machine to develop innovative solutions

Metso Paper is currently upgrading the No. 2 test paper machine at the Rautpohja plant in Jyväskylä, Finland. The installation started on June 17, 2006, and is expected to be completed by September. This upgrade is set to reinforce the machine's position as a global leader in test paper technology. The retrofit involves adding a new press section, enhancing the drying system, and improving several other key areas of the production process. As part of this transformation, Metso is introducing a new paper machine design that promises greater reliability, higher efficiency, and increased output. The upgraded machine will be capable of running at speeds up to 3,000 meters per minute, making it one of the most advanced test machines in the industry. The Rautpohja No. 2 experimental paper machine was commissioned in 1996 and has since been instrumental in developing and testing cutting-edge technologies such as the OptiFormer forming section, OptiFlo headbox, OptiPress closed traction press, OptiDry impact dryer, and HiRun blow box. Over the years, Metso has continued to invest heavily in modernizing the machine. A major retrofit two years ago introduced the OptiDry Twin impact drying unit, which removed speed limitations between the press and drying sections. These advancements have enabled Metso to deliver some of the fastest and most efficient paper and board machines globally. Metso Paper operates 12 technical centers worldwide, covering all aspects of paper, board, tissue, and pulp production. Rautpohja No. 2 is one of three experimental paper machines, alongside a test board machine, two laboratory tissue machines, and extensive surface treatment and finishing equipment. These facilities allow Metso to test a wide range of raw materials and processes, from pulping to printing, ensuring comprehensive innovation and quality control. As a global engineering company, Metso serves the pulp and paper, mining, energy, and other industrial sectors. In 2005, the company reported net sales of €4.2 billion and employed over 22,000 people across more than 50 countries. Its commitment to research and development continues to drive technological progress in the paper industry.
