Division 16 is complete

The image of Station 2 at Lisle Woodridge Fire Department, captured by Larry Shapiro, showcases the facility housing a medic unit, an engine, and specialized teams such as hazmat, dive team, and a mobile unit for fire investigations. This station plays a crucial role in covering approximately 100 square miles across Division 16, which comprises just three fire departments but manages an extensive network of 19 fire stations. These include the departments of Downers Grove, Lisle Woodridge, and Naperville. Notably, Downers Grove and Naperville have recently integrated their 14 stations into the system, while the five stations within the Lisle Woodridge Fire District are now part of the network as well. Adjacent to this, another striking image highlights Engine 541, the latest addition to their fleet, seen running out of Station 4. Engine 541 stands as a testament to the department's modernization efforts. Moving forward, the Lisle Woodridge Fire District operates with a diverse set of resources, including four engines, two trucks, a battalion chief, and four medic units. Interestingly, one of the medic units operates only during daytime hours. Both of their truck companies—comprising one ladder and one platform—are uniquely designed without water storage or pumping capabilities. Historically, the district maintained a full fleet of E-ONE vehicles for suppression purposes and relied on Freightliner/Life Line ambulances for medical services. However, recent shifts have seen a gradual transition toward Pierce units replacing older E-ONE models. Presently, two trucks and two engines are Pierce-built. Meanwhile, the medic units continue to use Life Line equipment, albeit with newer IHC 4300 chassis replacing the previous Freightliner FL60 models. An additional image features a unique piece of history: a 1984 Spartan Gladiator E-ONE rescue unit. Known for its distinctive square cab design, this vehicle was among the first of its kind produced by Spartan for suburban Chicago fire departments. Although initially unpopular due to its boxy appearance, this model paved the way for more streamlined designs in subsequent years. This particular unit, despite lacking specific assigned duties, remains a nostalgic reminder of the department’s rich history and evolution over decades. These visual narratives not only highlight the current operational capabilities but also underscore the progressive journey of the Lisle Woodridge Fire District, balancing tradition with innovation to serve their expansive coverage area effectively.
