Area fire departments receive donations

The Southtown Star recently published an article highlighting a significant donation of medical equipment by the Franciscan Alliance Foundation St. James Health to several local fire departments. According to a press release, the foundation provided state-of-the-art 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) devices to the fire departments in Country Club Hills, Homewood, and University Park. These devices are now being installed in their ambulances to improve emergency care. The new equipment allows first responders to perform 12-lead ECGs on-site during emergencies, particularly for patients suspected of having a heart attack, including ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), which is a severe type of heart attack. The system can detect abnormal ECG patterns that indicate blockages in the coronary arteries and send the data in real time to Franciscan St. James Health. This enables the hospital’s emergency department and cardiac catheterization lab to prepare for the patient’s arrival while they’re still en route, potentially saving critical time. According to the release, the quicker patients with STEMI receive treatment, the better their chances of recovery. The American Heart Association reports that nearly 400,000 people in the U.S. suffer from STEMI each year. Studies have shown that using 12-lead ECGs before hospital arrival significantly reduces the "door to balloon" time—the time it takes to open a blocked artery. Recent research has emphasized that the most effective results occur when the cath lab is activated while the patient is still being transported. Dr. Daniel Netluch, chief medical officer at Franciscan St. James, said in the release: “Our goal is to reduce the time it takes to get patients to treatment. The 20 to 30 minutes we can save by getting this information while the patient is in transit will help us save heart muscle, and ultimately more lives, as well as improve the quality of life for these patients.” In addition to the fire departments in the three communities, Franciscan St. James has also partnered with Chicago Heights, Frankfort, Matteson, and Monee. These partnerships have helped the hospital become the first and only south suburban facility to earn Chest Pain Center accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. Thanks Dan.
