On January 21, the Central Asia-China Natural Gas Pipeline Anti-corrosion Construction Base was officially established at the foundation of Alashankou Port. This development marks a significant step forward in the implementation of the China-Central Asia natural gas pipeline project, which is a key component of China's strategy to secure stable and diverse energy supplies.
The pipeline is designed to transport natural gas from Central Asia to China, aiming to increase the share of natural gas in China’s primary energy mix. This initiative not only strengthens international energy cooperation but also enhances energy security by diversifying supply sources. The project is divided into two phases, with the first phase completed and operational in 2009, and the second phase launched in 2015.
To ensure the quality and efficiency of the pipeline, advanced anti-corrosion technologies were adopted. The external surface of the steel pipes is coated with 3PE (three-layer polyethylene) for long-term protection, while the inner walls are treated with epoxy coatings to prevent internal corrosion. In order to reduce transportation costs and avoid damage during cross-border logistics, the China National Petroleum Corporation decided to build a large-scale anti-corrosion plant in Alashankou, investing 150 million yuan in the project.
The facility is expected to be fully operational by the end of March, with the goal of achieving an annual anti-corrosion coating capacity of 13.5 million square meters by the first half of the year. This would translate into an average daily production of 6 kilometers of anti-corrosive steel pipes, significantly supporting the overall pipeline construction timeline.
The establishment of this anti-corrosion base not only plays a crucial role in ensuring the timely completion of the pipeline but also contributes positively to the local economy by creating jobs and promoting infrastructure development in the region. As the project moves forward, it is expected to bring long-term benefits to both China and Central Asia through enhanced energy cooperation and sustainable growth.
