Shanxi backward coke enterprises will all shut down

In a recent report, a journalist learned from the Shanxi Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau that the province is taking further steps to regulate coke production that aligns with industrial policies and to shut down all outdated and illegal coke enterprises. This move comes as part of broader efforts to improve environmental standards and promote sustainable development in the region. Shanxi, being the largest and most significant coke production base in China, has long relied on the coking industry as one of its key economic pillars. In 2007 alone, the province produced 97.22 million tons of coke. However, this industry has also been a major source of pollution, emitting over 50 million tons of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, dust, and wastewater annually. To address these issues, Shanxi has implemented stricter regulations based on the "Regulations on the Coking Industry of Shanxi Province" and the "Entry Conditions of the Coking Industry." These measures are in line with national and provincial policies aimed at cleaning up and rectifying the coking sector. The focus has shifted toward eliminating outdated facilities, inefficient operations, and projects that waste resources and harm the environment. According to reports, in 2007, a total of 62 outdated coke ovens were shut down, reducing production capacity by 11.31 million tons. This action helped save approximately 1 million tons of standard coal and reduced comprehensive energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of added value by 8.5%. As part of the ongoing effort, all backward and illegal coke production enterprises in Shanxi are expected to be completely closed by 2008, marking a significant step forward in the province’s environmental protection strategy.
