Shanxi backward coke enterprises will all shut down

In a recent report, the journalist learned from the Shanxi Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau that the province is intensifying its efforts to regulate coke production that complies with industrial policies while shutting down all outdated and illegal coke manufacturing facilities. This move is part of a broader initiative to improve environmental standards and promote sustainable development in the region. As the largest and most significant coke production base in China, Shanxi plays a critical role in the national coking industry. The sector has long been one of the province's key economic pillars. In 2007 alone, the province produced 97.22 million tons of coke, but this growth came at a high environmental cost. The industry emitted over 50 million tons of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, dust, and wastewater annually, raising serious concerns about pollution and resource wastage. To address these issues, Shanxi has implemented stricter regulations based on the "Regulations on the Coking Industry of Shanxi Province" and the "Entry Conditions of the Coking Industry," along with national and provincial policies aimed at cleaning up and rectifying the sector. The focus is on phasing out outdated facilities, eliminating inefficient operations, and preventing environmentally harmful projects. According to reports, in 2007, 62 obsolete coke ovens were shut down across the province, reducing total production capacity by 11.31 million tons. This action saved approximately 1 million tons of standard coal and lowered the comprehensive energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of added value by 8.5%. Looking ahead, the province plans to completely ban all backward and illegal coke production enterprises by 2008, signaling a major shift toward more sustainable and responsible industrial practices.
