It was just after 5:00 AM when a fire broke out in an occupied two-flat apartment building located at 2715 East 75th Place. Engine 126 and Truck 49 were among the first responders on the scene, reporting smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the two-story brick building around 4:55 AM. The structure was part of a pair of attached buildings, each with two flats, and it seemed that the fire initially started in the eastern unit, remaining somewhat contained within that area at first.
However, things quickly escalated. By 5:11 AM, Battalion 23 upgraded the incident to a Still & Box alarm as the fire spread into the drop ceiling, threatening both units. Initial efforts by firefighters inside the building were halted due to safety concerns, and they retreated temporarily. But they soon regrouped and tried again to contain the blaze before it could engulf the entire structure. Unfortunately, progress was slow, and by 5:30 AM, the decision was made to switch to a more defensive strategy. Engine 126 and Truck 49 were pulled back from the front of the building, and Squad 5’s snorkel was deployed as the fire continued to spread, eventually consuming the attic space above both units. Around 6:40 AM, 2-2-6 sounded the box.
