It was early Sunday morning when a fire broke out in an occupied apartment building located at 2715 E. 75th Place. Around 5 a.m., Engine 126 and Truck 49 arrived to find smoke billowing from the second floor of this two-story, ordinary-style building. The structure consisted of two attached, side-by-side duplex apartments, and it seemed the fire had originated in the eastern unit and initially remained confined there. By 5:11 a.m., the 23rd Battalion upgraded the response to a Still & Box alarm as the fire spread through the voids in the drop ceiling, threatening to engulf both units.
At first, firefighters tried to contain the blaze from inside, but progress was slow. By 5:30 a.m., they had to switch to a more defensive strategy as the flames spread into the cockloft of both units. Engine 126 and Truck 49 were pulled back from the front of the building, and Squad 5’s snorkel was brought in to help manage the spreading inferno. It wasn’t until around 6:40 a.m. that 2-2-6 sounded the box.

In Photo #2, companies are seen attacking the fire from the outside just after their initial arrival. Photo #3 captures the moment when crews exited the building as the operation shifted to a more defensive stance.
