China Instrument Network has recently reported on the progress of a significant R&D initiative led by China National Machinery Co., Ltd. The Ministry of Science and Technology's High-Tech Research and Development Center officially announced the 2018 list of key national scientific research and development projects under the "Major Scientific Instruments and Equipment Development" program. Among these, the project titled "Development and Application of In-Situ Testing Instrument for Mechanical Properties of Materials" (Project No.: 2018YFF01012400) has been approved.
This project marks a major step forward in the field of material testing technology. The company, which was founded in 1959, is recognized as the central technical and standard management unit for the national testing machine industry, often referred to as the "cradle of China's testing machine technology." With a strong focus on product innovation and custom solutions, the company provides comprehensive services ranging from component development to full-scale industrial solutions.
The project was initiated following the previous "Major Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development" program in 2012 and received approval under the National "Major Scientific Instruments Special Project." It has secured 14.59 million yuan in funding and will be implemented over a three-year period. The goal is to develop an advanced in-situ testing instrument capable of evaluating mechanical properties of materials under high-temperature and high-frequency conditions, commonly required in aerospace, defense, and nuclear industries.
This innovative technology aims to overcome challenges in measuring micro-mechanical behavior, deformation, and performance evolution under complex loading conditions. By integrating advanced software and databases, the project seeks to provide reliable, stable, and locally developed equipment with independent intellectual property rights.
Key technical specifications include a static tensile load range of 0–100 kN, with a resolution of ≤2 N and accuracy of ±1%. Deformation measurement ranges up to 100 mm with a resolution of ≤10 μm and accuracy of ±2%. For static bending, the load range is 0–10 kN, with a resolution of ≤1 N and accuracy of ±1%. The system also supports high-frequency fatigue loads up to 10 kN at frequencies ≥20 kHz, and can operate within a temperature range of -20°C to 1100°C, with a control error of ±5°C.
Upon completion, the product must pass reliability tests, achieving an average time between failures of ≥3000 hours and reaching technical readiness level 8. The project also aims to generate intellectual property, including invention patents, standards, and software copyrights, while establishing mass production capabilities and setting sales targets for the project’s final evaluation.
By implementing this project, China National Machinery Co., Ltd. is not only advancing in-situ measurement technologies for static and dynamic mechanical properties but also promoting engineering development, application demonstrations, and industrialization efforts. This initiative represents a crucial milestone in the advancement of domestic material testing technology, offering innovative solutions that could lead to international breakthroughs.
