Historic fire: Goldblatt’s fire in Mt Prospect, 1977 (pt1)

Hey everyone, I just got some awesome information from Drew Smith regarding the Goldblatt’s fire that happened at Central and Rand Roads in Mount Prospect back on Sunday, February 6, 1977. It seems like there was a bit of a mix-up earlier since Drew initially thought it was 1976, but now we’ve got the correct year nailed down. These pictures show both Glenbrook’s and Mount Prospect’s Snorkels in action. Interestingly enough, you can see the Glenbrook Snorkel before they sent it off to Pierce for a new cab and chassis upgrade, complete with its updated yellow paint job. Drew mentioned he might have had a picture of Rolling Meadows’ Snorkel at some point, but unfortunately, he couldn’t locate it. However, he did point me towards this cool webpage that has a great three-quarter shot of both Rolling Meadows and Libertyville’s Snorkels. You can check it out here: [http://yngfire.com/index.php?topic=2952.0](http://yngfire.com/index.php?topic=2952.0). By the way, Drew Smith is a Deputy Chief over at the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District. Pretty cool, huh? On another note, Larry Shapiro came through with some fantastic images of those Snorkel units. One of them is from Glenbrook Rural FPD’s 1968 Ford/Pierce 75-foot Snorkel, taken before it went through any rehab work. Another one shows Glenbrook Snorkel 8 after it received its enclosed Pierce Arrow cab and a brand-new paint scheme in 1986. Then there’s Mount Prospect Truck 2, which was a 1964 American LaFrance 900 Series 90-foot Aero Chief Snorkel equipped with a 1,000-GPM pump. Lastly, there’s Rolling Meadows’ 1970 American LaFrance 90-foot 1000 Series Aero Chief Snorkel 630, also packing a 1,000-GPM pump. It’s always fascinating to look back at these old vehicles and see how firefighting technology evolved over the years. If anyone has any additional photos or stories about these units, feel free to share! Take care, [Your Name] P.S. I’m still waiting on more details about that Rolling Meadows Snorkel photo Drew mentioned. Fingers crossed someone finds it soon!
