At the Aurora Regional Fire Museum, located at 53 N. Broadway in Aurora, officials have noted some encouraging signs of a return to normalcy despite the ongoing pandemic. Since reopening in January under Illinois' COVID-19 mitigation framework, the museum has been welcoming visitors during its regular hours—Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Executive Director Brian Failing mentioned that foot traffic has picked up mainly in the afternoon hours, with roughly 30 guests per week. He expressed optimism that as warmer weather arrives, visitor numbers will increase.
Adhering to current health guidelines, the museum requires masks for all visitors and maintains strict social distancing measures. Interactive displays and any touchable features have been temporarily removed to ensure safety. In the meantime, efforts to enhance visitor experiences continue. Over the last couple of months, new exhibits have been introduced, including a series of six photographs showcasing fire department themes and a special display on loan from the national Emergency Medical Services community. This exhibit delves into the evolution of emergency medical services, tracing innovations from ancient battlefield practices to contemporary civilian methods, and is set to remain for several months.
Looking forward, the museum plans further developments. A Safety in the Home exhibit is scheduled for release this summer, aiming to educate visitors on practical home safety tips. Additionally, a new initiative is being prepared for the fall, which will commemorate two significant historical events. These upcoming projects reflect the museum's commitment to engaging the public while ensuring a safe and informative experience for everyone.
