On September 26, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in the Shibaozi Development Zone of Huating County for the Gansu Huating Zhongye Coal Chemical Co., Ltd. project, which includes a coal-to-methanol facility with an annual output of 600,000 tons. The project, backed by nearly RMB 2.7 billion in investment, marks the largest coal chemical initiative in Gansu Province to date. This milestone signifies the official start of the coal chemical project, setting the stage for significant industrial development in the region.
Huating County, located in Gansu, is one of the province’s top 100 coal-producing counties and a key coal base. It holds 3.47 billion tons of proven coal reserves, accounting for 40.2% of Gansu’s total, and is part of the three major coal mining areas in Northwest China. Additionally, it is among only five high-quality chemical coal bases in the country, making it an ideal location for advanced coal utilization projects like methanol production.
The 600,000-ton-per-year coal-to-methanol project is not only the largest in Gansu's coal chemical history but also a critical step in transforming raw coal into higher-value chemical products. Expected to be completed and operational by the end of June 2008, the project will consume approximately 1.62 million tons of coal annually and generate an average annual revenue of 1.06 billion yuan. Its strong profitability and resilience to market fluctuations make it a promising venture.
Once operational, the project will help establish a methanol-based fine chemical industry zone, extending the methanol supply chain. In the long term, it will also pave the way for a methanol-to-olefins (MTO) project, enabling the production of petrochemical products through a coal-based route, further enhancing regional energy security and economic growth.
The project is led by Huating Coal & Electricity Co., Ltd., with support from five other major shareholders, including Sichuan Xinfu Mining Group Co., Ltd., Huating Coal & Electricity Transportation Co., Ltd., Huating Longzhu Material Co., Ltd., and the Huating County State-owned Assets Investment Management Company, as well as Huating County Huating Coal Mine. This collaborative effort reflects a strategic push toward integrated coal and power development.
This major coal chemical project represents a significant breakthrough in the province's plan to leverage its rich coal resources for sustainable industrial growth. It underscores Gansu's commitment to advancing its energy and chemical industries through innovation and large-scale investment.
