Automotive Lightweight Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance Established

Ningbo, December 27 — The National "Automobile Lightweight Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance" was officially launched today at the Geely Group's base in Ningbo. This initiative aims to establish an effective collaboration framework between industry, academia, and research institutions, marking a significant step toward advancing China's automotive technological innovation strategy. The alliance was established as part of the broader national plan for medium- and long-term scientific and technological development, aiming to build a more robust national innovation system. The alliance is supported by key government agencies, including the Ministry of Science and Technology and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC). It brings together major players from the automotive sector, such as China FAW, Dongfeng Motor, Chery, Changan, and Zhejiang Geely, along with leading academic and research institutions like Jilin University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Baoshan Iron and Steel. Together, these organizations aim to tackle the challenges of lightweight material development and promote the adoption of advanced technologies in the auto industry. Li Xinnan, Deputy Director of the Department of Policy, Regulation, and System Reform at the Ministry of Science and Technology, emphasized that the alliance’s goal is to enhance China’s independent innovation capacity in the automotive sector. By combining resources from state-owned and private enterprises, as well as central and local companies, the alliance seeks to break through technical bottlenecks and accelerate the development of lightweight vehicle technology. This strategic move is not only about improving competitiveness but also about fostering long-term cooperation among industry players and research institutes. The alliance is expected to create a sustainable platform for joint research on critical technologies, ultimately strengthening the position of Chinese automakers in the global market. Looking ahead, the alliance plans to focus on energy efficiency, safety, and environmental standards, driving research into lightweight materials and their practical applications. Over the next three to five years, it aims to reduce vehicle weight by 8–10%, improve collision safety performance, and bring commercial vehicles closer to international lightweight standards. Fu Yuwu, Executive Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Automotive Engineers, highlighted that the alliance represents a breakthrough in China’s science and technology system. By pooling industry resources and expertise, it has the potential to significantly impact the future of the automotive sector. Zhejiang Geely Chairman Li Shufu added that the alliance will help elevate the technical level and global competitiveness of China’s domestic car brands. Following the launch, 12 companies signed agreements to formalize their participation in this collaborative effort.
