China's first large-scale plastic granulator started localization

Dalian Rubber & Plastics Machinery Co., Ltd. has recently revealed that its 200,000-ton large-scale plastic granulator is now in the manufacturing phase. This marks a significant milestone as China's first major plastic granulator enters full implementation. The project was officially recognized by the National Development and Reform Commission as a key national debt-funded initiative for domestically produced advanced equipment. According to the schedule, the first 200,000-ton unit is expected to be completed by early 2009 and will then be deployed at Yanshan Petrochemical Company. A plastic granulator plays a crucial role in the post-treatment of polyethylene and polypropylene production lines. It combines mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation technologies, offering high automation levels. As one of the core components in large ethylene projects, it is essential for efficient material processing. Currently, only a few global manufacturers, such as Germany’s W&P, have the expertise to design, produce, and install these units. In China, several 70,000-ton models have been developed through joint ventures with foreign firms, but full success has yet to be achieved. Large-scale granulators require a capacity of over 50 tons per hour, translating to an annual output of 300,000 to 400,000 tons. Their complexity and high cost make them expensive, with individual units priced between $5 million and $7 million. Despite this, demand has surged in recent years, leading to a shortage in supply. Experts note that future development trends focus on large-scale, precision engineering, and advanced control systems. Users are also increasingly concerned about machine stability, energy efficiency, and environmental impact. Modern polyolefin production lines can reach up to 500,000 tons annually, demanding reliable and efficient granulation systems. Precision extrusion is necessary for specialized materials, requiring the development of melt gear pumps. Additionally, intelligent systems that enhance performance, reduce waste, lower energy use, and minimize pollution are becoming essential. In developed countries, plastic granulators often feature real-time process monitoring and closed-loop computer control, ensuring consistent quality and accuracy. Compared to these standards, China’s technology remains less advanced, with most domestic efforts limited to smaller-scale units. Large and medium-sized extrusion granulators are still largely imported. However, Dalian Rubber & Plastics Machinery Co., Ltd. has made significant progress. The company has successfully designed 70,000 to 100,000-ton granulation units and mastered key manufacturing processes and special technologies through independent research and the integration of new technologies. This marks a critical step forward in China’s push for self-reliance in advanced industrial equipment.
