China's first large-scale plastic granulator started localization

Dalian Rubber & Plastics Machinery Co., Ltd. has recently revealed that its 200,000-ton large-scale plastic granulator is now entering the production phase. This marks a significant milestone as China's first large-scale plastic granulator moves into the official implementation stage. The project was officially recognized as a key national initiative under the National Development and Reform Commission’s domestic-produced major equipment debt program. According to the schedule, the first domestically developed 200,000-ton unit is expected to be completed by early 2009 and will then be deployed at Yanshan Petrochemical Company. A plastic granulator plays a crucial role in the post-treatment process of polyethylene and polypropylene production lines. It combines mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation technologies, offering high automation levels and serving as a critical component in large ethylene projects. Currently, only a handful of global companies, such as Germany’s W&P, possess the full range of design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning capabilities. In China, several 70,000-ton units have been produced through joint ventures with foreign firms, but these efforts have not yet achieved complete success. Large-scale granulation units require a production capacity of over 50 tons per hour, translating to an annual output of 300,000 to 400,000 tons. Their complex design and high cost make them expensive, with individual units priced between $5 million and $7 million. Despite this, the growing demand for granulators has led to a situation where supply cannot meet demand, keeping foreign products in high demand. Experts highlight that the future of large-scale plastic granulators lies in developing larger, more precise, and advanced control systems. Users are also increasingly focused on the stability, energy efficiency, and environmental performance of these machines. With global polyolefin production lines now reaching up to 500,000 tons per year, granulation units must not only scale up but also ensure operational reliability and precision. Some specialized plastics require accurate extrusion, which necessitates the development of advanced melt gear pumps. Additionally, next-generation granulators must integrate intelligent systems that enhance performance, improve material utilization, reduce energy consumption, and minimize pollution. In contrast, most developed countries have already implemented online monitoring and closed-loop computer control in their granulation processes, significantly improving product consistency and process stability. However, China still lags behind in this area. Currently, most domestic granulators are limited to small and medium sizes, while large-scale extrusion granulators for polyolefins are largely imported. In recent years, Dalian Rubber & Plastics Machinery Co., Ltd. has made notable progress. The company has successfully designed 70,000- to 100,000-ton granulation units and has mastered the manufacturing techniques and special technologies of key components through independent research and technology introduction. This progress represents a critical step forward in China’s efforts to develop advanced and self-reliant granulation solutions.
