Since the United States prevented Iranian plastics suppliers, Iranian National Petrochemical Corporation (NPC), from exporting plastic products to the United States, NPC has decided to expand its markets in Asia, Africa and Europe.
To this end, NPC pushed a batch of plastic projects into production, so that Iran became the second largest thermoplastic plastic producer in the Middle East following Saudi Arabia. Despite Iran’s current overcapacity in plastics, NPC is still preparing to reach a capacity of 770,000 tons per year by mid-2006, including HDPE, LLDPE and LDPE, PP, PS, ABS and epoxy. By 2008, the project that NPC plans to put into production can increase its total thermoplastic production by almost 10 times to 7 million tons per year. The 50% joint venture between NPC and Sasol Corporation of South Africa will build 300,000 tons/year of high-density and medium-density PE and 300,000 tons/year of LDPE devices in the second half of this year.
