Shashank Priya of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and colleagues are currently working on a battery that allows users to generate electricity after sounding or touching the keyboard, or even simply shaking.
Researchers have experimented with zinc oxide, a conventional piezoelectric material, to observe its effect of converting vibration and pressure waves into electricity. The experimenter generated about 50 millivolts of electricity by making a 100 dB sonic vibration. "It doesn't generate a lot of electricity, big enough to keep the phone running, but at least it can be used as emergency power," Priya said. “In an emergency, you only need to shake your phone for a few minutes to get the power to maintain an important call.â€
