Beijing buses will be fully replaced with new eco-cars in 2008

In recent reports, it has been revealed that Beijing is undergoing a major transformation in its public transportation system. By 2008, over 3,000 traditional red and yellow buses were completely replaced with new, eco-friendly models. This marks a significant step towards greener urban mobility. In addition, the city is set to establish the world's largest fleet of natural gas-powered buses, further reducing emissions and improving air quality. One of the most exciting developments is the introduction of China's first zero-emission fuel cell bus, which is expected to enter trial operation soon. This innovation represents a major leap forward in sustainable transportation technology. Currently, Tsinghua University, the Beijing Tsinghua Industrial Development Research Institute, and the Beijing Bus General Factory have formed a joint research base focused on the development of urban buses. This collaboration is working on fuel cell city buses as part of the national 863 key projects. The project has made considerable progress, and after addressing some technical challenges during real-world operations, the bus is expected to go into trial use this year. Beijing already operates more than 1,800 natural gas buses, each equipped with 7 to 12 gas tanks. However, the newly developed liquefied natural gas (LNG) buses offer improved efficiency. By storing natural gas in liquid form, these buses take up less space, reduce vehicle weight, and provide a longer driving range, making them a more practical and efficient option for daily urban transit. This ongoing shift toward cleaner and smarter transportation not only supports environmental goals but also enhances the commuting experience for residents. With continued investment and technological advancements, Beijing is setting a strong example for other cities around the world.
