GAC Group, much like SAIC Motor in the past, has emerged as a rising star in China's automotive industry. However, it has long been known as "the miracle on passenger cars, but the underdog in commercial vehicles." From Guangzhou Honda to Guangzhou Toyota, GAC's product lineup has been heavily focused on passenger cars, while its commercial vehicle segment remained relatively small. Only a few brands like Guangzhou Isuzu and Yangcheng Automobile operated in the commercial vehicle space. Due to this "partial division," GAC still faces a significant gap in its ambition to become a top-tier domestic auto group.
Since the success of Guangzhou Honda, GAC has not stopped striving to strengthen its position in the commercial vehicle market. In 2004, it initiated negotiations for a commercial vehicle joint venture and even explored acquiring local commercial vehicle companies—but these efforts did not bear fruit. Last year, under the guidance of Toyota, Hino Motors, a subsidiary of both GAC and Toyota, officially launched the GAC Hino project. This partnership involved a total investment of 3.1 billion yuan. GAC Group Chairman Zhang Fangyou called the project a crucial step toward making GAC a true automobile giant.
However, unlike successful passenger car ventures, most commercial vehicle joint ventures in China have struggled. Examples include the Sino-SinoSteel and VOLVO truck projects, as well as the Dongfeng Renault Truck Project, which never fully materialized. Even recent collaborations, such as Mercedes-Benz with Beiqi Foton, have faced challenges. As a result, many projects have ended in failure, and GAC continues to face difficulties in its commercial vehicle endeavors.
Despite this, Zhang Fang remains optimistic about the GAC Hino project. He points to GAC’s previous successes in foreign joint ventures, where the company gained valuable experience in management and talent development. Additionally, the Pearl River Delta automotive cluster centered around Guangzhou offers strong support for commercial vehicle development, helping to reduce costs. Moreover, the commercial vehicle market has shown faster growth than the passenger car sector, and with the expansion of high-grade highways in China, the timing seems favorable.
That said, the commercial vehicle market is different from the consumer car market. While passenger car sales are driven by personal consumption, commercial vehicle demand is closely tied to investment and infrastructure projects. Although commercial vehicle sales hit over 30% in 2007—an increase of more than 20% compared to the overall auto market—consumer spending had been restrained for three years prior. The Olympic factor in 2008 gave a short-term boost, but as macroeconomic control measures tightened and monetary policy became stricter after 2008, the investment-driven growth may slow down.
Therefore, the future of the GAC Hino project, which started in 2009, remains uncertain. Whether it can truly capitalize on the commercial vehicle boom depends on a variety of factors, including economic conditions, market demand, and operational performance. For now, the road ahead remains challenging but full of potential.
