Beijing buses will be fully replaced with new eco-cars in 2008

In recent reports, it has been revealed that Beijing is undergoing a major transformation in its public transportation system. The city is set to completely replace all of its traditional buses with environmentally friendly alternatives. By 2008, over 3,000 red and yellow old buses were already phased out and replaced with modern, eco-conscious models. Moreover, Beijing is on track to establish the world’s largest fleet of natural gas-powered buses. In addition, the city will also introduce China’s first zero-emission fuel cell bus, which is expected to go into trial operation soon. Currently, Tsinghua University, the Beijing Tsinghua Industrial Development Research Institute, and the Beijing Bus General Factory have joined forces to create the country's first dedicated research center focused on the development of urban buses. This collaboration includes the R&D of fuel cell city buses under the national 863 key projects. Significant progress has been made in the trial production phase. Once some technical challenges related to real-world operations are resolved, the project is expected to move forward with full-scale trials this year. Beijing currently operates more than 1,800 natural gas buses, each equipped with 7 to 12 gas tanks. A newer version of these buses uses liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is stored in liquid form. This innovation not only reduces the space required for storage but also lowers the overall weight of the vehicle, leading to improved fuel efficiency and extended driving range. These advancements highlight Beijing’s commitment to sustainable and efficient public transport solutions as it continues to modernize its infrastructure.
