China's first self-righting high-speed rescue boat, developed by Harbin Institute of Technology, has successfully completed its trial in Shenzhen. This innovative vessel, known as the SD (Hailong) 928J, is a remarkable advancement in maritime safety. It can flip over and return to an upright position in under two seconds—significantly faster than the international standard of around six seconds for similar boats.
The SD 928J was developed over nearly two years through collaboration between the Transportation Department of Dalian Maritime University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Shenzhen Haisby Boat Technology Development Co., Ltd. The boat is designed to automatically right itself when overturned by strong winds and waves, making it ideal for emergency rescue operations in harsh sea conditions.
During testing, the boat underwent a full 360-degree flip test, and the results met all design specifications. This capability ensures that rescuers can operate safely even in extreme situations. The boat is constructed using advanced composite materials and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, ensuring durability and performance.
Measuring 9 meters in length, the SD 928J can carry up to 16 people or a load of 5 tons. It is built to withstand wind forces of up to level 10 and features a fully enclosed structure. Even if all compartments are damaged, the hull remains unsinkable, providing an extra layer of safety for crew and passengers.
To help preserve the energy of rescuers during critical missions, the boat includes special safety seats and other ergonomic features. These improvements make the SD 928J not only a technological breakthrough but also a practical tool for saving lives in dangerous marine environments. Its development marks a significant step forward in China’s efforts to enhance maritime rescue capabilities.
