Driven by the sustained and rapid growth of the national economy, the machinery industry has maintained a strong performance, playing a crucial role in China's industrial development. From January to May, the total industrial output value of the sector reached 1995.348 billion yuan, accounting for 17.69% of the country’s total industrial output—an increase of 1.8 percentage points compared to the same period last year. This places the industry in second position among the 12 major sectors, just behind the light industry. In terms of value-added growth, the machinery industry saw a 21.3% rise, up from 13.3% in the previous year, climbing from the tenth to the fourth position in growth ranking.
The production of new products has also seen significant momentum. The output value of new products during this period reached 375.219 billion yuan, an increase of 30.31% year-on-year, outpacing the overall industry growth by 1.47 percentage points. Among sub-sectors, the automotive industry contributed the most with a 52.7% share, followed by electrical appliances (20.13%), petrochemical general industry (5.65%), heavy mining industry (5.42%), and instrumentation (3.01%). Regionally, the eastern and western regions both recorded a 31% growth in new product output, while the central region lagged behind by over 7 percentage points.
In terms of export delivery value, the industry achieved 308.05 billion yuan from January to May, showing a 22.05% year-on-year increase despite a continued downward trend from the previous month. The fastest-growing sectors in export delivery were the automotive industry (50.07%), heavy mining (33.75%), construction machinery (32.37%), petrochemical general industry (43.40%), and agricultural machinery (30.09%). Electric and electronic products accounted for 30.37% of the total export value, followed by automobiles at 16.97%. The cultural office industry had the highest export rate at 85.24%, followed by instrumentation (26.08%) and electrical appliances (18.66%).
Product sales remained stable, with a sales rate of 96.80%, nearly matching the 96.83% recorded in the same period last year. Several industries reported high production and sales ratios, including the cultural office industry (100.33%), construction machinery (97.75%), and general basic parts (97.36%). On the other hand, the food packaging and internal combustion engine industries had lower rates at 94.28% and 91.51%, respectively.
Nearly 90% of major products experienced year-on-year growth. Out of the 95 products tracked, 84 showed increases, with 61 growing by double digits, representing 64.21% of all products. Only 11 products declined, or 11.58% of the total. Large and medium-sized tractors saw a cumulative increase of 58.27%, while harvesting machinery surged by 91.28% year-to-date. Small tractors, however, fell by 10.33%.
CNC machine tools outperformed traditional ones, rising by 23.29% versus 10.35% for ordinary tools. However, the growth of CNC metal forming machines lagged behind by 34.97 percentage points. With increased investment in petrochemicals, environmental protection, and urban infrastructure, petrochemical equipment rose by 204.77%, gas compressors by 26.45%, and papermaking machinery by 73.85%. Noise and vibration control equipment saw a 155.36% surge.
Digitized and intelligent instruments in the instrumentation sector grew by 28.75%. Power generation equipment remained steady, with hydro generators up 15.97% and turbo-generators up 24.15%. Finally, automobile production reached 3.2617 million units, a 30.65% increase year-on-year, with sedans surging by 60.11%.
