The "Beijing Olympic Center Athlete Apartment," a key green project of the Beijing Olympics, and other notable buildings such as the Hangzhou "Shengshi Qiantang" residential energy-saving demonstration project, Shenyang's "Vanco Rancho Santa Fe Villa," and Shanghai's iconic World Financial Center—standing at 492 meters—have either been completed or are set to open soon. These structures all incorporate energy-efficient materials, including Dow Chemical’s Shu Tai Long thermal insulation board, which plays a vital role in enhancing building performance and sustainability.
One prominent example is the first phase of the "Riverside New City" project, developed by Shenyang Huaxin International and Hong Kong Lianmei Group. This development includes 31 multi-story and small high-rise buildings, a four-star multi-functional club, and a kindergarten. The project uses 60mm-thick Shu Tai Long insulation boards, covering more than 80,000 square meters of exterior wall insulation. It has received recognition, winning the Silver Cup for the Three Cities of the Three Provinces and the Four Cities for Observing Works.
Dow Chemical has long been a leader in providing high-quality building energy-saving solutions. Its commitment extends beyond products to broader sustainable development goals, including improving housing, ensuring clean water access, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As a pioneer in building energy efficiency, Dow continues to innovate and deliver top-tier energy-saving materials that support environmental protection and energy conservation.
The Shu Tai Long insulation board, made from extruded polystyrene, features a rigid closed-cell structure, offering excellent thermal insulation, moisture resistance, and compressive strength. It is widely used in roofs, walls, basements, and even in cold storage and refrigerated transport. Its lightweight and easy-to-bond properties make it ideal for a wide range of applications.
At the 2008 China (Beijing) Real Estate Exhibition Fair, a survey conducted by Dow revealed that 79% of visitors were willing to pay an extra 100 yuan per square meter for better external wall insulation, recognizing the long-term benefits of energy savings over 3–4 years.
With the Chinese government promoting energy-efficient buildings and growing consumer awareness, more developers are now prioritizing energy performance. The use of Shu Tai Long insulation has helped many buildings enhance their market competitiveness. Dow’s energy-saving solutions have become a cornerstone in China’s push toward sustainable architecture.
In 2007, Dow was recognized as one of the most influential companies in architectural energy conservation and was named among the "Top Ten External Wall Thermal Insulation Enterprises" and "Top Ten International Brands."
Currently, Shu Tai Long insulation boards are produced in 23 factories across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Japan. The material is used in over 21 million buildings worldwide, saving approximately $9 billion in energy costs annually.
Neil Ryan, Director of Market Development for Asia Pacific at Dow’s Building Applications Division, emphasized that China’s “Eleventh Five-Year†plan aims to significantly improve energy efficiency in new buildings. By 2010, all new buildings must achieve 50% energy savings, with larger cities targeting 65%. If these goals are met, China could save 110 million tons of standard coal between 2006 and 2010.
Dow is committed to the Chinese market, introducing advanced technologies and collaborating with institutions like the Berkeley National Laboratory and the China National Energy Research Institute. Through joint research and partnerships with top universities, Dow is developing tailored solutions for China’s external wall insulation needs, ensuring the best energy-saving materials for diverse architectural applications.
