On August 28, the 350,000-ton-per-year high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant at Maoming Petrochemical officially commenced operations. As the world’s largest facility of its kind in terms of production capacity, the plant has successfully started up and is now producing high-quality products that meet national standards. The smooth and safe operation marks a major milestone for the company and fills a critical gap in Guangdong’s HDPE supply chain. This new unit is expected to significantly ease the imbalance between domestic demand and supply.
With an investment exceeding 600 million yuan, this advanced HDPE unit incorporates cutting-edge technology. Key equipment, including reactor circulation pumps and catalyst activation furnaces, was imported from nine different countries. The loop pipe slurry process technology, sourced from Chevron-Phillips of the United States, is a first-of-its-kind implementation in China. The facility is capable of producing over 20 grades of HDPE, including materials used for blown films, packaging, pipes, injection molding, and cable insulation, among others.
HDPE is known for its excellent resistance to aging, low-temperature performance, chemical resistance, and high crystallinity, making it ideal for applications in home appliances, electronics, and textiles. Currently, more than 60% of China’s HDPE demand is met through imports. Guangdong, with its well-developed consumer electronics and appliance industries, has long relied on foreign imports for HDPE. The completion of this new unit not only meets local demand but also strengthens the national HDPE market by reducing dependency on imports.
This 350,000-ton-per-year HDPE unit is part of Maoming Petrochemical’s larger 1-million-ton-per-year ethylene project expansion, which was completed on June 30 this year. Before the start-up, the company conducted extensive technical training for employees to ensure they were fully prepared for large-scale production. During the commissioning phase on August 28, the entire process was completed in just six hours, demonstrating the efficiency and success of the operation. This achievement highlights Maoming Petrochemical’s growing capabilities in advanced petrochemical production and its role in shaping the future of China’s plastics industry.
